Thanks to its rheological and optical properties, Lithopone 30% offers both technical and economic advantages in the substitution of titanium dioxide in different applications. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is by far the most suited white pigment to obtain whiteness and hiding power in coatings, inks and plastics. This is because it has an extremely high refractive index and it does not absorb visible light. TiO₂ is also readily available as particles with the right size (d ≈ 280 nm) and the right shape (more or less spherical) as well as with a variety of post-treatments.

Titanium Dioxide prices in Germany increased by about 4% in the second quarter compared to what was seen in Q1 from historical price trends. Due to the restrictions on Russian energy imports brought on by the sanctions imposed by European countries, domestic production of TiO2 saw its costs surge even further. Additionally, the commodity's price was highlighted and its market expansion was supported by the upstream construction and automation sectors' buoyant demand.

After oral ingestion, the absorption of titanium dioxide particles is low, however they can accumulate in the body, Maged Younes, chair of the European Food Safety Authority's expert Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings, said in a May 2021 statement.
